I taught high school math for 18 years before becoming a high school math consultant in September of 2009. My main role is to support the teachers of the Edmonton region in the implementation of a revised program of studies that asks teachers to make a significant pedagogical shift. In this curriculum, teachers are asked to orchestrate experience that will allow students to construct their own meaning.
My consulting job gives me the opportunity to get into math classrooms across Edmonton, Alberta and see some of the great things our teachers are doing. I have learned a great deal about teaching math since becoming a consultant, and I am confident I will be a much better teacher when I return to the classroom.
